The Danger Posed by Flock Surveillance Cameras and What We Can Do About It (Zoom meeting)
March 26 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
The Flock license plate readers, in use in Morton Grove and the surrounding area, offer public safety benefits in helping police find vehicles suspected of being involved in crimes, stolen cars, abductions, and missing persons. However, the technology raises concerns regarding intentional and unintentional abuse in the way the data that it obtains can potentially be shared, including instances elsewhere where it has been made available to ICE. Citing these concerns, dozens of communities have terminated Flock contracts.
In this Zoom, we’ll learn about how Flock operates, what makes this particular system susceptible to misuse, and what remedial options we have going forward. Our presenter will be Christopher Whitaker, executive director of the Alliance of Civic Technologists. There will be time for Q&A.
